Are you skilled in a particular subject area? Do you have a good understanding of child development? Are you a problem solver? Are you an active listener? Do you like to help children figure out their homework, guide them through questions and problems, encourage critical thinking, and reach those “aha!” moments?

If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, this volunteer opportunity may be just right for you!

This 2-hour Zoom training is primarily a group discussion that will focus on:

  • child welfare
  • how children in foster care have unique academic challenges compared to children not in foster care
  • how to manage any challenges during tutor sessions.

For safety purposes, we will also ask you to take a 30-minute online assessment called the Diana Screen – a sexual risk screening tool for individuals who work with children – during the training. All results will remain confidential. Our focus is to protect children and youth.

After this 2-hour session, you will be invited to complete an additional one-hour session, which includes watching a video and answering a few reflection questions to assess your understanding along the way.

As a tutor, you will receive support from our team at Fostering Great Ideas!

Consider becoming a tutor if you can commit to one quarter of weekly tutoring support for a student in foster care. Statistically, these students have the lowest academic scores and lowest high school graduation rates of any other group. Why? They are in a point of limbo – with significant uncertainty. Yet, they are capable. Thank you for helping them to see this.
