Placement Options Increase

Larger Families Can Foster Too

Background

The DSS code of regulations states “A foster home shall not be licensed for more than five (5) children, including the foster parents’ own children and/or other children who are household members unless SCDSS or child placing agency is keeping siblings together or the placement has been court ordered.”

South Carolina is one of only 5 states with this 5 children limitation. This legislation would increase the number of available foster homes, resulting in more placement options.

Key Points

  • Takes away limitation on parenting 5 children in total.
  • Moves the focus to no more than 5 fostered children.
  • Opens up ability of larger families to foster, still with discretion of case management.
