Some people shudder when they hear the word “Algebra.”
For most, you either like math with letters or you don’t. There is not much in between. Tyrese was one of those students who wasn’t fond of algebra. His learning differences and challenges within the classroom made the subject difficult. He was in need of additional support outside of school.
Things got easier with the assistance of his tutor Matthew. Tyrese and Matthew meet weekly, virtually, to work on Algebra together. Each session together brings its own challenges, but each session also shows learning. Tutor Matthew shared, “At the end of our sessions, Tyrese is showing me how to work through the problems!” Tyrese and Matthew are able to celebrate these small wins at the end of their time each week.
Small wins, like knowing how to simplify a quadratic equation, are positive moments in Tyrese’s life.
You see, in addition to being a child in need of extra help in math, Tyrese is in foster care. Tutoring may not be as fun as sports or video games, but these sessions with Matthew help Tyrese both academically and personally. Each successful tutoring session is an opportunity for Tyrese to see and experience succeeding in life even when things are difficult. Some might even say that the growth from tutoring has the potential to be, in algebraic terms, exponential.
