Are you skilled in a subject area taught in middle or high school? Do you understand the developmental milestones of younger children? Are you creative? Do you like to guide children through questions and problems, encourage critical thinking, and reach those “aha!” moments? If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, this volunteer opportunity may be just right for you!

Volunteer through our Tutor Match® program to help children in foster care to catch up in school. Tutors commit to at least one school quarter (3 months) of weekly virtual tutor support for a student in foster care. Tutors must be at least 18 years of age, and pass a national background check and risk assessment.

Statistically, students living in foster care have the lowest academic scores and lowest high school graduation rates of any other group. Why? They are in a point of limbo – with significant uncertainty. Yet, they are capable. Tutors help them to realize this.

This 2-hour training will focus on child welfare, how children in foster care have unique academic challenges compared to children not in foster care, and how to manage the challenges in the tutor sessions. For safety purposes, we will ask you to take a 30-minute confidential assessment called the Diana Screen – a sexual risk screening tool for individuals who work with children – during the training.
